About
The Score
The
original music that energizes THE WIND is the work of the great
Johnny Lee Michaels of Helsinki, Finland. I met Johnny through a mutual
friend (that's its own story) and now, through our collaboration on THE
WIND, I feel privileged to also call him friend. Aside from my tremendous
affection for Johnny Lee Michaels the person, I have nothing but respect
and awe for the talents of Johnny Lee Michaels the musician, composer
and producer.
The score Johnny delivered for THE WIND did nothing short of
complete the film. Now, I'm not comparing THE WIND to Steven
Spielberg's great horror-thriller Jaws (or Johnny Lee Michaels
to John Williams), but the difference between watching THE WIND
before Johnny's score was spotted-in is the same difference as watching
Jaws without John Williams' score. That boast is in no way meant to detract
from all of the talents that contributed to THE WIND; but score
music can be, and in the case of THE WIND is, as indispensable
an element of a fully realized film as, say, the screenplay, cinematography
and editing.
Like all the great movie scores, Johnny's music for THE WIND
never overpowers the film. What it does is distinctly compliment the mood,
tone, action and emotion of the shots, sequences and scenes while helping
to define the whole. Not only that, Johnny's score assuredly stands on
its own as a glorious musical composition and production.
Johnny reminds me what a great pleasure it is to be a part of the most
collective form of expression that has ever existed. As a film director,
you'd better surround yourself with people who are better at what they
do than you could ever hope to be. But, like the captain of a ship, you
must have a relative grasp of your crew's duties and disciplines in order
to guide them to your vision. Unfortunately, I know enough about music
to be dangerous. Fortunately, every idea for music/scene unity that I
offered to Johnny was elevated to a level of perfection that I didn't
realize was possible or was traded for something better, and incidentally,
completely unimagined (by me). I count my work with Johnny among my few
completely successful collaborations.
Thank you, Johnny,
Michael Mongillo
